What is it with the generation I grew up in that lack the accountability?  I feel as though I was blessed to be surrounded by a family that instilled hard work.  I was very fortunate and have a family that many would call successful.  Many people think that my personal success is from having grown up in the situation I did, which in ways it has. This blog post is to explain a bit of why I think growing up with a father who forced accountability on me to be one of the bigger growth factors.

In business and specifically entrepreneurship you wear the hat of all the roles. So how does one make sure they find the most success? What I do is target a goal and try my best to get there. It could be as simple as block off an hour to work on a specific project or a sales goal for the month.  From there it is up to myself and the people around me to reach that goal!

What you quickly realize is you cannot do everything on your own.  As much as you want to be hands on in every situation you are doing more damage than good.  You have to delegate roles to those around you.  This is where accountability comes in! You must be clear with those who you give roles to or those that volunteer to do those roles.  Once you have set the job or task there should be a conversation about what is expected out of them. Once they know what is expected out of them it should be very clear on a timetable on when it should be completed.

This is where stuff starts to get a bit crazy in my opinion.  I am not sure if it’s the fact that people of our generation have been shielded or that cancel culture is so rampant now a days, but people HATE criticism.  Be the opposite end of that spectrum; thrive on the criticism and am my biggest critic.  If you want to grow you have to be able to learn from your failed attempts and be able to openly listen to those who are being critical of you.  From an early age I was told if I signed up for something, I had to see it through until completion! Even if I hated it! 

That ONE THING is what molded me to be who I am today! It also molded my expectations of others.  In life there is always someone out there who has it better or worse.  You are in control of one thing your entire life and that is YOU! Be the person you SAY you are going to be to others and yourself. When you do not keep your word, you should be held accountable, there should be words spoken, and you should be able to handle those words.  If you have excuses or hide behind something in defense you are hurting yourself even more in the process.  Believe it or not everyone has tons of shit going on in their life.  You should have been aware of this before you signed up for your task!  THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE OUT THERE WHO CAN REPLACE SOMEONE! 

How do I think people can improve this poor trait that culture has instilled in us? Be self-aware.  We have done a podcast on this as well which you can listen to HERE! I find it mind blowing the number of individuals that lack the self-awareness.  Every week you should audit yourself and be able to see what can be improved on! BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF! Lying about a result doesn’t change anything! There is often talk of Auditing your Circle which we have also done a podcast on HERE!  To me with accountability you should AUDIT YOUR CIRCLE when those around you are not providing what they say they are going to do.

REMEMBER YOUR WORDS ARE ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR ACTIONS! Go out there and be the best person you can be!

Napolean Hill calls Faith (what we take as belief) a state of mind that can be induced by affirmation or repeated instructions of the subconscious mind.

Emily Coue – basically the OG of positive psychology for self development

  • a form of self-hypnosis where you visualize your goal and then back it by the emotions and repetition
    • it allows you to break through to your own subconscious mind to form that belief 
  • Conscious mind acts as a defender to all of the different stimulations in the world
    • Average person is exposed to 5,000 ads per day 
    • Our conscious mind blocks out 99.9% of those 

IT CAN BE USED FOR GOOD OR BAD 

When Rodger Bannister became the first person ever to run a 4-minute mile, within two years 37 other people did it, when nobody in history had ever done it.

There was a study done by criminologists on how people could do something that they knew was inherently wrong. They found that when these people first come into contact with crime, they don’t approve. Then when they’re in it a bit longer, they get to the point where they tolerate it, and after a while they finally embrace it and become influenced by it.

Are you spending to much time Planning for 2021?

With 2021 less than a week away, it’s safe to say most people are fucking PUMPED to leave 2020 in the rear-view mirror. Between The Rona, the job market, no sports, no social gatherings, no seeing grandparents, etc. who wouldn’t be excited about a year where things can only go up? That said, this is the time most start to plan out their goals in hopes of big changes to come. While planning is definitely important and can save you a ton of time and energy, one of the biggest things I’ve learned is that a lot of people (myself included) can take too much time planning and not enough time doing.

Planning can be fun for people. It’s where you start to paint the picture of your vision. It’s where you look at where your life is, where you want it to go, and you get to fill in the gaps that will help you get there. But too many people fall into this perpetual cycle of planning, where they plan, review the plan, restructure the plan when the find holes, and then audit again to find holes, and round and round they go while they neglect the single most important step that will get them to their goals – ACTION. I’ve been there!

Unfortunately, a lot of this has to do with what formal education teaches us. We’re looking for that “A+ Plan” so that if my plan is perfect, I can avoid any discomfort or embarrassment. News Flash: As soon as you start to implement your plan it’s going to get punched in the fucking mouth no matter what line of work you are in. 

Planning versus Action

This weeks topic is Planning vs Action and the importance of the two.  We discuss what percentage we feel should be put towards both in order to succeed toward your goals.  We talk in depth about paralysis by analysis and the Pareto Principal as they go hand in hand with this topic.

So what do I need to know about planning? How much time do I spend on planning? How do I effectively plan? We’ve got you covered. Here are 3 questions to ask yourself before you get started with planning: 

  1. What have I done and how did it go? 
    1. We call this Retrospective Planning. The most significant leaps you will take in your planning come through auditing what you’ve done and figuring out what you can do better.  

  2. What’s my ONE Thing? 
  1. If you haven’t read The One Thing by Gary Keller, we suggest you do so immediately. In his book he has you ask yourself a very simple, yet profound question before you get your day/week/month/year started – “What’s the one thing I can do, such that by doing it everything else is easier or unnecessary?”
  2. This is THE most effective way to prioritize. Once you figure out your ONE Thing add it to the beginning of your plan, then ask the question again until your schedule is full. 

  3. How much time am I spending planning?
  4. We like to go with a 90:10 ratio. No more than 10% of your time should be spent planning. Here’s a template you can used based on a 40-hour work week.

                                                              i.      1 Hour every Sunday to plan your week ahead

                                                             ii.      15 minutes M-F before you start your day

                                                           iii.      15 minutes M-F before you end your day for Auditing (Retrospective Planning)

                                                           iv.      That’s a total of 3.5 hours per week. Save that extra 30-minutes each week to use at the end of each month where you’ll spend an 1-2 hours auditing your past month and planning the upcoming month 

One of the biggest lies we’re told growing up is that “Knowledge is power”, which is bullshit. Knowledge is completely useless without ACTION. APPLIED KNOWLEDGE is where the real power is. Yes, planning is important and it will help get us to where we want to go faster, but at the end of the day, if you’re spending all of your time on the sidelines measuring the track, analyzing the turf, and trying to predict the weather, you’re never going to get into the race.

This week on the Brofessional Development Podcast the guys dive into the quote “Separation is in the Preparation” which has been discussed by the likes of Ed Mylett and Russell Wilson! Along with giving us an update on their 75Hard Journey!

Starting with Separation is in the Preparation the guys discuss what they believe the meaning behind it is. How they utilize it on a daily and weekly basis. The pros and cons to being prepared, as when is to much preparation holding you back from executing. They also based a new challenge for each other based around it for next week! They guys are going to plan out a full week in advance and see how closely they can stay on schedule when being prepared! Matt is clearly the front runner among the guys to complete and win this challenge!

With 75Hard the guys talk about the challenges they have encountered so far. Dan is struggling with a bit of anxiety with the intent of his workouts! Colin seems to have found a solid routine, and with the help from his girlfriend they seem to be on the right track. Bobby is absolutely KILLING it, he is 30 days in and 41lbs down! Check out his instagram post HERE! Brad is also on good track and is finding himself a lot more in touch with nature during his outdoor workouts. The key words that seemed to come out of everyone during this discussion though was TIME MANAGEMENT! Which connects “Separation is in the Preparation”, without a clear plan the guys seem like their days can be more work and harder to complete 75Hard each day!

Bobby also ended the episode with a solid quote which circled us back to our previous episodes on Law of Attraction!
